Last night we had our fourth Acts bible study of summer. The scripture we looked at was Acts 4:1-31 & 5:12-42. A lot of scripture to go over in one night, right? When I told the guys the text we'd be reading over they were pretty excited because of the intensity and growth that has come from our first three studies. I wanted to share the prayer that was so inspiring to the study group last night during our study. It is called the "believers prayer", and is Acts 4:24-30. When they heard this, they raised their voices together in prayer to God. "Sovereign Lord," they said, "you made the heaven and the earth and the sea, and everything in them. You spoke by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of your servant, our father David: " 'Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the Lord and against his Anointed One. Indeed Herod and Pontius Pilate met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed. They did what your power and will had decided beforehand should happen. Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness. Stretch out your hand to heal and perform miraculous signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus." Take note on verse 29 that Peter asks the Lord for more boldness through the name of Jesus Christ. In the dictionary the word "boldness" should be defined simply as this: Speaking as Peter when he was filled with the spirit. Peter is the man. We were talking about last night how the teachers of the law were probably already stunned that Peter and John were both average men. These men knew the law like no other, and whenever other people had claimed to the Messiah they squashed there revolt only by killing there leader (Acts 5: 33-39). They are so frustrated by the way the spirit rebukes and shows them the truth that they throw the apostles in jail because they had no of option. Well that didn't stop them because an Angel of the Lord opens the prison door (note that there are guards at the door) and within a small period of time they are preaching in the temple courts preaching again. Our God is always victorious and it is absolutely necessary for us to be bold as we speak to others about Jesus Christ. I ask that on this day we all pray for boldness and praise God for the way the Apostles were so spirit filled, bold, and provide us unbelievable examples of what type of faith a Christian should exhibit in their walk with the Lord. May the Lord bless you with boldness today.
